HIGHLIGHTS:

Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the nation with his last Mann Ki Baat radio broadcast today. He said he is confident that with the blessings of the people, he will return in May after the Lok Sabha elections and address the nation again. In his Mann Ki Baat address, Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke about the families of the CRPF jawans who were killed in the Pulwama terror attack. He said the nation is angry and hurt by the attack. This was PM Modi’s second Mann Ki Baat address for 2019. PM Modi said the National War Memorial will be inaugurated tomorrow (February 26).

Addressing his last and 53rd Mann ki Baat session in his present term, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday promised to return after the 2019 Lok Sabha elections and address the nation again via the radio programme in May.

Modi asserted confidence that with the ‘blessings’ of the people, he will return in May after the Lok Sabha elections and address the nation on the last Sunday of May with a new edition of Mann Ki Baat. “To honour and respect the healthy democratic practice, my next Mann Ki Baat address will be on the last Sunday of May,” he said.

Opposition parties have in the past demanded stopping the broadcast of Mann ki Baat during elections, saying it violated the model code of conduct as the interaction amounted to the misuse of the prime minister’s programme for political purposes.

PM Modi who paid tributes to the slain CRPF personnel in his Mann ki Baat, said the people of India are hurt and angry after the terror attack. “I salute the soldiers who sacrificed their lives. Their sacrifice will motivate us and strengthen our resolve,” Modi said.

The Prime Minister praised the families of the killed soldiers for showing strength in their hour of grief. He said that the families have become a source of inspiration of the nation.

The Prime Minister added that the National War Memorial will be inaugurated on Monday and called upon the people to visit the memorial and post photos of their visits on social media so that it inspires others to visit the memorial. He also expressed surprise at the fact that the memorial was not constructed before by previous governments.

Modi also paid rich tributes to former PM Morarji Desai whose birthday falls on 29th February, a day which comes once in four years. Modi praised Desai for bringing in the 44th amendment of the constitution. “This was important, because during the emergency, the 42nd amendment which curtailed the powers of the Supreme Court and introduced other provision was reversed.”

He also hailed the contributions of tribal leader Birsa Munda and noted industrialist Jamshedji Tata.

The Seoul Peace Prize is dedicated to the people of India & our country’s culture of peace and harmony.

While expressing his gratitude for the prestigious award at the ceremony, Modi said, “The success that India has achieved in the last five years is due to aspirations, inspiration and efforts of the people of India. On their behalf, I accept the award and express my gratitude.” The prime minister also said that he was honoured that the award is being conferred on him in the year that India celebrates the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.

Established in 1990, the Seoul Peace Prize was an effort to crystallise the Korean people’s yearning for peace on the Korean Peninsula and in the rest of the world. It was initially established to commemorate the success of the 24th Olympic Games held in Seoul, Republic of Korea – an event in which 160 nations from across the world took part, creating harmony and friendship and a worldwide atmosphere of peace and reconciliation.

Previous winners of the award include former UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and international relief organisations like Doctors Without Borders and Oxfam. The prize has been awarded to those who have made their mark through contributions to the harmony of mankind, reconciliation between nations and to world peace.

Sushma Swaraj is Twitter’s biggest rockstar. Move over, PM Modi and Amitabh Bachchan

Sushma Swaraj is seen as a minister who can be contacted by common people round the clock but she also holds a unique record that makes her Twitter’s biggest rockstar. Read on to know what it is.

Sushma Swaraj has won many hearts on Twitter with her humanitarian approach to solving common people’s problems, but her unique record is something else. (Photo: Reuters)

If she applies for the Guinness Book of World Records, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj has a fair chance of bagging one. It may even be a cakewalk for her.

Unlike many other world-record holders, she does not have to pull gigantic trucks with her hair, smash xyz number of tube lights in a minute, walk for days without stopping for once, sit inside a room full of snakes and spiders, climb all major mountains in xyz manner, read a pile of books in a day, give a marathon speech running for hours, lift/pull/drag/throw something or any of the other weird and not-so-weird tasks to get her name in the book.

All Sushma Swaraj needs to do is simply continue what she is doing and apply to Guinness. Once her application is accepted, she may not even have to give a demonstration of her unique achievement. All that the jury requires to verify her claim is a mobile phone/computer connected to the Internet.

So, what is this unparalleled record of Sushma Swaraj that places her even ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, former US President Barack Obama, football legend Cristiano Ronaldo, Rihanna and every other celebrity you can think of?

We know that Sushma Swaraj is India’s foreign minister and a long-time parliamentarian of the Bharatiya Janata Party. Besides this, she is known for her powerful oratory skills; she has served as Delhi’s chief minister; was Leader of Opposition during Manmohan Singh-led UPA 2; a minister in Atal Bihari Vajpayee government etc etc etc…

But none of these qualify for a world record. Sushma Swaraj is a politician and her political career, though illustrious in its own right, isn’t even a distant contender for a world record. The world is full of similar and more illustrious political profiles.

But there is something else about Sushma Swaraj that makes her a contender. It is possible that even she doesn’t know about it. And if she knows it and is quiet about it, it just adds to her swag.

Okay, so enough of beating around the bush. You have read till here and there’s nothing on Sushma Swaraj’s unique record, right? I get it.

But hey! Read the headline again. There is a hint. A rather big one. I dropped another hint in the second paragraph. Did you pick it? Mobile phone/computer and internet? Yeah.

So, based on these two hints, we know that the unique record has got something to do with Sushma Swaraj and Twitter.

But what exactly on Twitter?

In the past five years, we have seen that as India’s foreign minister Sushma Swaraj has won many hearts on Twitter with her humanitarian approach to common people’s problems.

Be it an Indian stranded in a distant land, a girl from Pakistan requesting medical visa, bringing back Indians from the Middle East or the day-to-day grievances on passports and visa applications.

She has also charmed Twitterati with her sense of humour while responding to queries on problems with refrigerators and whether her ministry can help someone in Mars.

That is great. Adorable, cute and heart-warming even. But not good enough for a world record, is it?

Uhmm…let’s examine numbers. The answer lies there. You see it every time you land on Sushma Swaraj’s Twitter profile. But have you seen it carefully enough?

Sushma Swaraj joined Twitter in November 2010. At the time of writing this (12:50pm February 22, 2019) she had 12.1 million (1,21,00,000) followers. She has tweeted 6,100 times and liked 11 tweets as on date.

But this too is nothing in comparison to Rihanna, Cristiano Ronaldo, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and others.

What actually distinguishes Sushma Swaraj from every other celebrity is not the number of followers she has on Twitter. What makes her unique is the number of people she is following on Twitter.

The answer is: Zero.

Sushma Swaraj joined Twitter in November 2010.

Yes. Sushma Swaraj does not follow anyone on Twitter. And yet, she has 1,21,00,000 followers, heads an important ministry, meets foreign dignitaries, takes part in world summits, converses with common people and often wins hearts with her replies.

A broader perspective on Sushma Swaraj’s Twitter presence can be understood from Twiplomacy Study 2018, a global study of world leaders on Twitter. The study ranks Sushma Swaraj among the 10 most followed leaders in the world.

For 2018, Twiplomacy Study said, Sushma Swaraj was also the most followed woman leader in the world.

However, at present, other politicians have taken over her in terms of number of followers. In India, she is currently the fifth most followed politician. Prime Minister Narednra Modi leads the tally with 45.8 million followers, followed by Arvind Kejriwal (14.5 million), Arun Jaitley (14 million), Amit Shah (12.6 million) and Rajnath Singh (12.2 million).

But the differentiating factor is that all of them are following at least 150 people.

When it comes to celebrities like Rihanna, Cristiano Ronaldo, Sachin Tendulkar, Amitabh Bachchan, Priyanka Chopra, or world leaders like Barrack Obama, Donald Trump, Justin Trudeau and Hilary Clinton, they too have massive following on Twitter (far greater than Sushma Swaraj).

But they too follow someone or the other.

So, Sushma Swaraj’s Twitter uniqueness lies in having 12.1 million followers without following any one.

Only she can tell if she consciously chooses not to follow anyone on Twitter or has the thought of following someone never crossed her mind since 2010 when she joined the site.

Irrespective of this, her Twitter statistics of ‘zero following’ and 12.1 million followers makes her an interesting contender for a world record. Whether Guinness Book of World Records can have a category for ‘First politician to achieve 12 million Twitter followers without following anyone’, is something the records body will have to think about. That is, if and when Sushma Swaraj decides to apply for the record.

Till then, happy tweeting.

In a surprising statement contrary to his son Akhilesh Yadav’s stance, Samajwadi Party (SP) patriarch Mulayam Singh Yadav praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi in parliament today, which left the opposition squirming but were greeted by cheers from the treasury benches with the PM acknowledging Yadav’s “blessings” with folded hands.

He also said that he hopes that BJP wins the upcoming Lok Sabha elections and the Prime Minister Narendra Modi returns to power again.

“I hope we see the same set of MPs in the next Lok Sabha,” Singh said in Lok Sabha in his valedictory speech in Lok Sabha, drawing applause from the BJP members who are in a majority in the House.. Today is the last day of the 16th Lok Sabha.

Pointing towards Modi, Mulayam said: “I hope that Modi becomes Prime Minister again. He must get another term.”

Ruling alliance members heartily cheered Yadav with chants of “Jai Shri Ram” as he praised Modi for “making efforts to take everyone along”.

Interestingly Mulayam was seen making this statement standing next to Congress leader Sonia Gandhi.
The statement has come when Akhilesh Yadav has formed an alliance with once-rival BSP in Uttar Pradesh against BJP for the Lok Sabha elections.

Mulayam Singh, the founder of Samajwadi Party and former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister, had indulged into an open spat with his son Akhilesh Yadav just before the Uttar Pradesh state elections.

Ruling Samajwadi Party led by Akhilesh Yadav lost the state elections in 2017 pretty badly against BJP. The saffron party had bagged 312 out of 403 seats in the state elections.

Urging all countries to unite against terrorism, Prime Minister Modi said that hesitating from taking actions against terrorists and their supporters will be like encouraging terrorism.

Putting an end on any possibility of dialogue between Indian and Pakistan, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Monday, said that the brutal terrorist attack in south Kashmir’s Pulwama district shows that time for talks with Pakistan has passed.

Urging all countries to unite against terrorism, Prime Minister Modi said that hesitating from taking actions against terrorists and their supporters will be like encouraging terrorism.

PM Modi’s statement came after delegation-level talks with Argentina President Mauricio Macri, who is on a three-day visit to India.

Asserting that India and Argentina will issue a special declaration on terrorism later today, PM Modi said, “Hesitating from taking actions against terrorists and their supporters will be like encouraging terrorism. Being a part of G20 countries, it’s also important that we implement 11 point agenda of Hamburg Leaders Statement. “

The Prime Minister further said that he and Argentina’s President agree that terrorism is a huge threat for global peace and stability. “Brutal terrorist attack in Pulwama proves that time for talks has passed. Now the entire world needs to unite against terrorism and its supporters and take strong actions,” the PM added.

On February 18, 40 security personnel lost their lives and several others were injured after a Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) terrorist rammed an explosive-laden car into a CRPF convoy in Awantipora of South Kashmir’s Pulwama district. The convoy comprised 78 buses in which around 2500 personnel were travelling from Jammu to Srinagar.

Earlier, Prime Minister Modi said that if someone teases new India, it will not let it go unpunished. He also said that security forces have been given a free hand to punish the perpetrators of the attack.
