No Muslim among 162 BJP candidates in Rajasthan Polls : Is party back to Hindutva?

Of the 162 BJP candidates, announced so far in two instalments for the 200-member Rajasthan Assembly polling for which is due on December 7, one absence the observers have marked is of any Muslim candidate, strengthening the perception that the party is playing the Hindutva card.

Mahesh Sharma, Union Minister of State for Tourism and Culture, who comes from Alwar, strongly denies the Hindutva slant, yet there are others in the party who say the BJP knows it well that Muslims in Rajasthan don’t constitute a vote bank.

One of the sitting MLAs, Habibur Rehman from Nagaur, on Wednesday joined the Congress when he failed to find his name in the list released on Sunday.

Rahman said the BJP is playing the Hindutva card in Rajasthan.

Another state minister Yunus Khan too failed to find his name. But, unlike Rehman, Khan has expressed his loyalty to the party.

Soon after the BJP released its first list of candidates, general secretary of BJP’s Minority cell M Sadiq had written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressing his concern as to how party members would reach out to the community if Muslims don’t get the party nomination.

The BJP in 2013 had fielded four Muslim candidates. Two of them were elected: Habibur Rehman from Nagaur seat and Yunus Khan from Deedwana.

“The BJP is a democratic party unlike the Congress where a board decides a candidate. The candidates are selected keeping in mind a variety of factors, including candidates’ strengths,” said Mahesh Sharma.

Avinash Rai Khanna, BJP’s Rajasthan election in-charge, said party candidates are shortlisted after ‘raishumari’ in consultation with grassroots workers as well as top leaders. He said the final BJP list is yet to come and until then no conclusion should be drawn on the composition of candidates based on caste and religion.

Rajasthan Congress vice-president Archana Sharma said, “The BJP could not perform in the state. Now they are trying to polarise the situation. But this won’t work… Rajasthan is no Uttar Pradesh.”

Salawat Khan, General Secretary, BJP Minority Morcha, said in the last elections, the party gave four tickets to Muslims. “So far we have not been given any party nomination. We are still hopeful that the party would consider candidates from the community,” he said.

In 2013 polls, the BJP had swept 163 of 200 assembly seats in Rajasthan.

Sitting BJP Lawmakers In Rajasthan Fear Party May Drop Them

No list is out yet in Rajasthan, where assembly elections will be held after the polling in Chhattisgarh, but party leaders say there is apprehension among its MLAs over failing to secure a renomination.

After the BJP denied tickets to several sitting MLAs in the first list of candidates for the Chhattisgarh assembly polls, party legislators in Rajasthan are keeping their fingers crossed.

No list is out yet in Rajasthan, where assembly elections will be held after the polling in Chhattisgarh, but party leaders say there is apprehension among its MLAs over failing to secure a renomination.

This comes amid speculation that about 80 BJP MLAs in Rajasthan will be denied the ticket this time as the party fights anti-incumbency and faces a stiffer challenge from the Congress in the December 7 elections, as indicated by some opinion polls.

The current 200-member Assembly has 163 BJP MLAs.

Party leaders said some sitting MLAs are trying to seek tickets for their family members after their poor performance in the bypolls for the parliamentary seats of Ajmer and Alwar and the Mandalgarh assembly seat.

Several party MLAs have indicated to the state leadership that want to change their constituency this time.

But the party may not allow this.

“Let the list of candidates be announced,” BJP’s Rajasthan election in-charge Prakash Javadekar recently told reporters. “We might replace candidates but the candidates will not be allowed to change seats.”

In the run-up to the elections, party leaders including Mr Javadekar, BJP state in-charge Avinash Rai Khanna and state BJP president Madan Lal Saini have also made clear that winnability would be the key criterion for picking candidates.

Party leaders said they are working on how to deal with possible protests by MLAs who are denied tickets and their supporters.

Rajasthan : Six new Zika cases, total 123

Six more people tested positive for Zika virus in Rajasthan’s Jaipur district Sunday, taking the total number of such cases to 123, a government official said.

Of the 123 patients, around 105 have recovered after treatment, he said.

The state health department also formed a five-member committee on Saturday to investigate, examine and track Zika virus disease in pregnant patients of first trimester. The committee will submit the report to the director public health from time to time, an order said. Most of the cases which have been reported are from Shastri Nagar area here where fogging and other anti-larvae activities are being carried out to prevent the spread of the virus.

The virus, transmitted through the aedes aegypti mosquito, causes fever, skin rashes, conjunctivitis, muscle and joint pain. It is harmful to pregnant women, as it can lead to microcephaly, a condition in which a baby’s head is significantly smaller in newborns. In India, the first outbreak was reported in Ahmedabad in January 2017 and the second in Tamil Nadu’s Krishnagiri district in July that year. Both these outbreaks were successfully contained through intensive surveillance and vector management.

On Friday, more than 5,000 medical shops in Jaipur and around 45,000 medical shops in Rajasthan remained closed over the union government’s decision to regularize online pharmacies.

The medical shops, including the wholesale shops  that abound in the Film Colony and those that operate outside the Sawai Man Singh Hospital, the largest operating public sector hospital in state, remained closed. The support for the call for nationwide shutdown in other districts was more or less the same, with most chemists shutting down their outlets on Friday. An almost total  shutdown was reported from Kota and Jodhpur despite government’s call to  private hospitals to keep their drug stores open.

“All the shops across the state remained closed today, business worth Rs 75-100 crore was affected in a single day due to  the strike,” informed Ajay Agarwal, spokesperson of Rajasthan Chemist Association.

As per a rough estimate trade worth Rs 10-12 crore went down the drain in Jaipur due to closure of more than 5,000 shops. The result was that patients were seen going from one market to another in search of  medicines.

The situation of patients who were admitted to the hospital did not suffer much as hospitals had stocked medicines  after the state health department swung into action to lessen the impact of the  bandh and tackle the shortfall of medicines for in-patient departments. However, the patients of OPD were seen carrying the prescription from the doctor and were looking for  outlets that could provide them the said medicines.

There was some relief to the pensioners who could get a limited supply of medicines from the medical stores run by the cooperative department. But largely the patients felt helpless as the shops remained closed throughout the day.

The branded medical stores had already sent advance text messages to their customers informing them about the strike and to arrange for emergency medicines in advance.

The state government had made arrangements to make sure that medicines were available in abundance at all Community Health Centers, Primary Health Centers, District Hospitals, Sub Centers, Hospitals  associated to Medical Colleges, PM Jan Aushadhi Kendra, Life Line Fluid Stores  and Co operative medical stores across the state.

The Threat

  • The traditional medical shops are seeing the online pharmacy business as a threat and want that the provisions of online pharmacy should not be made legal. There are a large number of people who have started buying medicines from online pharmacy platforms.
  • They say that it’s against rules of Drugs and Cosmetics Act 1945 and the proposed set of provisions for online  retailers go against interest of traditional shops.
