Former cricketer Gautam Gambhir joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Friday, 22 March.

He joined the party in the presence of Union ministers Arun Jaitley and Ravi Shankar Prasad.

“I am inspired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision for India. Will work to make India even better,” said Gambhir, joining the party. He added that he is “honoured” to get the opportunity to join the platform.

Jaitley, taking a jibe at the Congress party, said that Gambhir has been “aggressive” against Pakistan on field since his cricketing days and that he will not change his stance.

“Match is always won on the front foot and not the back foot,” Jaitley said.

Gambhir met BJP President Amit Shah, after joining the party.

Gambhir played a key role in India’s triumph in the 2011 World Cup and the 2007 T-20 World Cup. He was also recently given the Padma Shri award.

BJP sources told PTI that Gambhir may be fielded from the New Delhi constituency, currently represented by the party’s Meenakshi Lekhi.

A final decision is yet to be taken though, they added.

If I Join Politics, Don’t Vote for Gautam the Cricketer: Gambhir

In an interview to The Quint, earlier in January, Gambhir said if he ever were to make a foray into politics, people should vote for him not because he was a cricketer, but only if they believe he can deliver.

“Honestly, I haven’t even thought about it. Plus, if ever there is a situation in life that I get into that space, don’t vote for Gautam Gambhir the cricketer, don’t vote for Gautam Gambhir the human either. Vote for Gautam Gambhir if you believe in him. If you believe he can change your life for the better and can make this country a better place to live. Vote for that Gambhir. Because if you don’t believe those things, don’t vote for him because I would never get into this space thinking I’m a power-hungry boy.”

The general election will be held in seven phases from April 11 to May 19, 2019. The counting of the votes has been scheduled for May 23 and results will likely be declared on the same day i.e., May 23.

The poll panel of the election commission had also announced the Assembly elections dates for Arunachal Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Sikkim, and Odisha. The Assembly polls in these four states will be held along with the general election 2019.

DOUBLE BLOW For Nirav Modi: UK Court Refuses To Grant Bail After Arrest, Judge Says He Has ‘Every Incentive’ to Not Surrender

Nirav Modi has been dealt a second blow in the space of just two days – one that he will feel tangibly – as the UK court where he appeared following his arrest by London authorities has rejected the fugitive diamantaire’s bail application. As a result, Nirav Modi will remain in custody till March 29 when the next hearing will be held.

Tellingly, the judge, while rejecting the bail application, said that there was substantial grounds to believe that Nirav Modi would fail to surrender if he were granted bail.

With Vijay Mallya’s lawyer Anand Doobay representing him in the court, Nirav Modi’s side’s argument was that the charges were politically motivated and that he had been cooperating with agencies. He refused to give consent for his extradition.

In terms of the specifics of his arguments, Nirav Modi put up a brazen defence, attempting to tell the court that he had only found out of the PNB scam when he attempted to get a Letter of Understanding (LoU) but was told that he couldn’t and it was illegal. The LoUs had served as the medium by which Nirav Modi had defrauded Indian banks to the tune of Rs 11,400 crore, by using the letters sanctioned by an errant PNB branch to claim massive loans from overseas branches of Indian banks.

Earlier on Wednesday, Republic TV had learnt that Nirav Modi had been arrested in London on account of the arrest warrant that had been issued against him by the Westminster Magistrates court following India’s efforts to extradite him. The London Metropolitan Police confirmed the arrest by issuing the following statement:

“Nirav Deepak Modi, 48 (Date of Birth 24.02.71), was arrested on behalf of the Indian Authorities on Tuesday, 19 March, in Holborn. He will appear in custody at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, 20 March.”

The developments come barely two weeks after Nirav Modi made his first appearance since the PNB bank scam broke out, being confronted by reporters during a walkabout in London. At that time, the diamantaire had remained brazen, something that was picked up on by Omar Abdullah following the arrest:

Rupee goes from Asia’s worst to best currency as market sees Modi 2019 returning

Asia’s worst-performing currency took five weeks to become its best.

The turnaround has been fueled by the improved chances of Prime Minister Narendra Modi winning a second term amid recent tensions between India and Pakistan. The optimism has led to local shares and debt luring robust flows, which have turned the carry-trade returns on the rupee to the highest in the world in the past month.

“The high-yielding rupee will likely advance further if Modi wins a second term,” said Gao Qi, a currency strategist at Scotiabank in Singapore, who expects the currency to rally to 67 per dollar by June-end. A dovish tilt by major central banks in the face of a faltering global expansion could also prompt foreigners to chase higher yields in emerging Asia, he said.

Foreigners bought a net $3.3 billion of shares through March 18, accounting for more than half the $5.6 billion of inflows year-to-date, and raised holdings of bonds by $1.4 billion this month. The gush of dollars sent the rupee to its highest level since August, prompting profit-booking that saw the currency posting its first drop in seven sessions on Tuesday.

Gaining Allure

Borrowing in dollars to purchase rupee assets has earned 3.8 percent over the past one month, the best carry-trade return in the world, data compiled by Bloomberg show. Two opinion polls showed Modi’s ruling coalition may get close to the 272 seats needed for majority in elections that begin on April 11. Results are due on May 23.

“The market is pricing in a Modi victory as there are no other factors that explain the sudden change of mood,” said Anindya Banerjee, an analyst at Kotak Securities Ltd. in Mumbai. “On top of that, carry traders are eager to be long rupee and short other low-yielding currencies, including the dollar. It is a get-set-go for the rupee.”

Options Costs

The rupee optimism is also reflected in the derivatives market, where one-month options conferring the right to sell the rupee now cost 19 basis points more than those to buy. That’s down from 148 on Sept. 5, which was the highest since November 2016.

“Global conditions — dovish Fed and ECB — have turned more supportive and domestically, increased confidence in the BJP’s prospects and a recovery in portfolio flows have been the key driver” for the rupee, said Dushyant Padmanabhan, a currency strategist at Nomura Holdings Inc. in Singapore.

Swings Ebb

The rupee’s three-month implied volatility, a gauge of expected swings used to price options, fell to 5.87 percent on Friday, the lowest reading since August.

“We expect the rupee to remain resilient in the near term, as bunched up foreign inflows limit any pressure from weakening EMFX sentiment,” Barclays Plc strategist Ashish Agrawal, wrote in a note. “A potential BJP-led coalition victory would bode well for the INR for the rest of this year.”

Union Minister Nitin Gadkari said there is no ‘220 club’ in the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) hoping for a reduced tally, which could see the emergence of an alternative to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Speaking to The Times of India, Gadkari rejected any discussion of a possible alternative candidate and asserted that the party will return to power with a full majority under PM Modi’s stewardship.

Gadkari’s name has often been the subject of speculation as an ‘acceptable’ candidate if the saffron party falls significantly short of majority.

The Union minister for Road Transport & Highways told the newspaper: “I don’t do such calculations or have any such expectations, I am a worker of the party. I am sure that the work done under PM Modi will result in a full majority. No such situation is going to happen.”

Gadkari expressed confidence that the development work done by the government would enthuse people to support the BJP and give them a second term.

For months now, reports have suggested that Gadkari — who is considered close to the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) — could be a consensus candidate within the BJP, if the party is required to seek external support to form the government. Speaking to the newspaper, Gadkari rejected the speculation.

Recently, the Member of Parliament (MP) from Nagpur, played an important behind-the-scene role in ensuring the BJP retained power in Goa after the death of then Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar.

In 2017 too, after the BJP failed to attain majority in the state Assembly polls, Gadkari had flown down to help the BJP cobble up an alliance with smaller parties in the coastal state, after which a government was formed under Parrikar’s leadership.

In his blog, PM Modi not only listed the achievements of the BJP-led NDA government since 2014 but also asked citizens to “think wisely” before casting their votes.

Hinting that governance improved in India after his government came to power, PM Modi wrote: “Indians were tired of our beloved nation being in the Fragile Five, where corruption, cronyism, and nepotism made headlines instead of anything positive.”

“India has made remarkable achievements in sanitation coverage (from 38% in 2014 to 98% now), banking the unbanked, financing the un-financed, building futuristic infrastructure, homes for the homeless, providing healthcare for the poor and educating the youth,” Modi wrote.

‘Institutions above everything else’

The prime minister also said that there has been a paradigm shift as the government focuses on its institutions.

Taking another dig at the Congress party, he said, “India has seen that whenever dynastic politics has been powerful, institutions have taken a severe beating.”

Modi also highlighted that overall productivity of the 16th Lok Sabha was an 85 per cent, while Rajya Sabha’s productivity was at 68 per cent.

“The Interim Budget session witnessed productivity of 89 per cent in the Lok Sabha and a mere 8 per cent in the Rajya Sabha,” he said.

“The nation knows the numerical dynamics of both houses. It is clear that when a non-dynasty party in higher number its tendency to work more is visible,” Modi added.

He also urged people to ask why the Rajya Sabha was not working as productively as the Lok Sabha, hinting at opposition ruckus.

Freedom of speech, courts

Expressing his views on freedom of speech, PM Modi said dynastic parties have “never been comfortable” with a free and vibrant press.

“No wonder, the very first Constitutional Amendment brought in by the Congress government sought to curtail free speech. Speaking truth to power, which is the hallmark of a free press was seen as vulgar and indecent,” he wrote.

The recent UPA years saw the bringing of a law that could land you in prison for posting anything offensive, he said.

He even invoked the Emergency of 1975 in his speech, adding that the declaration by the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi turned the nation into an overnight prison.

“Congress’ modus operandi is simple- reject, discredit and threaten. If a judicial verdict goes against them, they reject it, and then they discredit the judge and thereafter, talk about bringing impeachment motions against the judge,” he wrote.

‘Armed forces never got respect from Congress’

Prime Minister Narendra Modi further criticised the Congress party for always treating the defence sector “as a source of income” and that is why armed forces “never got the respect” it deserved from the party.

“After 1947, every Congress government has seen multiple defence scams. They began with jeeps and then moved to guns, submarines, and helicopters,” he wrote.

“Every middleman is linked to one family,” Modi added.

Citing the Balakot airstrike, PM Modi said, “When our forces strike at terrorist elements, Congress leaders accuse the political leadership of doing Khoon Ki Dalali. When our air warriors strike at terrorists, Congress questions that too.”

‘Congress does not believe in internal democracy’

PM Modi said Congress is a party which does not believe in internal democracy and accused its top leadership of being involved in a “major scam”.

“When the authorities seek to question them on their dealings, they do not even bother to reply. Are they scared of accountability or do they not believe in it?” he questioned.

Last but not least, the prime minister urged people to “think wisely” and asked them to compare the past with the present.

“Think wisely: As you go to vote- remember the past and how one family’s desire for power cost the nation so greatly. If they could do it then, they can surely do it now,” he said.

India beat Maldives by 6-0 in 5th SAFF Women’s Championship

Defending champion India on Wednesday defeated Maldives by 6-0 in the 5th South Asian Football Federation (SAFF) Women’s Championship.

Keeping its unbeaten record India easily defeated Maldives in its first group match in Nepal’s Biratnagar.

Indian girls dominated the first half and took a 5-0 lead. In the second half, India could manage only a single goal. India has remained unbeaten in SAFF championship since the beginning of the tournament in 2010.

It has won all 20 matches so far. Now India will take on Sri Lanka in its second match in Group B on Sunday.

In group A, Bhutan will play against Bangladesh tomorrow.

Lok Sabha Election Dates, Schedule 2019: The Model Code of Conduct (MCC) comes into effect from today itself in the entire country. Any violation will be dealt with in the strictest manner, says Chief Election Commissioner Sunil Arora.

The current term of the present Lok Sabha will end on June 3.

Lok Sabha election 2019: The Election Commission of India (ECI) has announced final dates for the Lok Sabha elections 2019 during a press conference at 5PM on Sunday. The General Elections 2019 will be conducted in seven phases in April-May, beginning from April 11. The elections will be held for 543 seats on nearly 10 lakh polling booths across the country, while the counting of votes will take place on May 23. With the announcement of election dates, the Model Code of Conduct has come into effect from today, says Chief Election Commissioner Sunil Arora. At the press conference, CEC Sunil Arora said that nearly 90 crore people are registered as voters, of which 1.5 crore voters in the age of 18 and 19. The current Lok Sabha’s tenure ends on June 3.

3.05pm: During the last five years, the Bharatiya Janata Party’s performance in the Lok Sabha bypolls has failed to impress or make a positive impact. In a total of 27 Lok Sabha bypolls since the 2014 Lok Sabha polls, BJP has managed to win only five seats. While BJP’s tally stands at 268 seats, Congress’s has managed to capture 45 seats. However, out of 542 parliamentary constituencies, 22 are still vacant.

1.40pm: The impasse between the CPI(M) and the Congress over the seat-sharing deal in Bengal seems to have resolved after intervention of Rahul Gandhi and Sitaram Yechury. According to PTI, after the CPI(M) announced candidates for Raiganj and Murshidabad Lok Sabha seats, the state unit of the Gandhi-led party urged the AICC to look into the matter.

1.10pm: Will the EC announce dates for Assembly polls in J&K? While there is a view that the J-K assembly elections can beheld along with the Lok Sabha polls, a lot depends on the complex security situation in the state given the heightened tension along the India-Pakistan border. The Centre and the state administration, being managed by the Centre-appointed Governor, are against holding the two elections together, reported PTI. However, all political parties in the state favoured simultaneous polls during a meeting with the Election Commission earlier this week. The J-K assembly’s six-year term was to end on March 16, 2021, but it got dissolved after a ruling coalition between the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) fell apart.

The window available this time is still similar. But not much.
