‘Take this BJP pamphlet, but vote for TRS’: Telangana election campaigns just another work opportunity for rally-goers

The money spent by political parties for the Telangana Assembly elections can be palpated in the alcoholic breaths of several flag-bearing men at the political rallies in and around Hyderabad. The money offered at the rallies — around Rs 300 per rally — is over Rs 100 more than Telangana’s rate under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MNREGS) and close to the daily wage in many parts of the state. For the labouring poor, who are generally employed temporarily and often work under MNREGS, the elections are just another job, a source of income, except that most of the money spent is unaccounted for.

The State Election Commission of Telangana seized over Rs 112 crore — Rs 90 crore in cash — till this week. The figure touched Rs 104 crore after income tax officials found Rs 51 lakh in cash at the farmhouse of S Shridhar Reddy, brother-in-law of Narender Reddy, a candidate of the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) contesting from the Kodangal constituency.

A notebook the I-T department found in the farmhouse reveals the magnitude and methods in which money is being spent on the elections in Telangana. “Pages 1, 2 and 3 (of a diary) have notes from 27 November when a search took place. The total of all the entries comes to around Rs 1.2 crore,” I-T sleuths told the Telangana Chief Electoral Officer in a letter. The notebook also reveals that money was being spent on political campaigns, or “to get political favours by distributing money to various leaders”.

I-T sleuths also found that several pages of the notebook were regularly torn in an attempt to cover their tracks. A loose page found in the farmhouse contained details of wine distributed across 26 gram panchayats.

Furthermore, scores of enthusiastic men cheering at political rallies in Hyderabad are often inebriated. I can vouch for this from the two political events I attended in Hyderabad on 2 and 3 December — a mega TRS rally held at Parade Grounds that Telangana chief minister K Chandrashekhar Rao attended and a roadshow by the “Prajakutami”, the alliance of the Congress, Telugu Desam Party (TDP), Telangana Jana Samithi (TJS) and Communist Party of India (CPI), attended by Andhra Pradesh chief minister Chandrababu Naidu.

“Look at them!” a traffic police signaled to me as I took photos of school vans that were being used for the TRS election rally. “Not the vans, the people inside them.” I could see a few young men lying inside a school van. The traffic police said that they were too drunk to get out of their vehicles.

Alcohol is a theme that perhaps unites people at many election rallies across Telangana. “We were given flags and brought here. Most men have gone to work, which is why there are several women here,” a drunk labourer said, holding onto me for support. A few attendees at the rally said they would be paid around Rs 300 after the event.

While the drunks at KCR’s rally enjoyed themselves dancing to the TRS’ songs and munching on snacks, those at Naidu’s rally were either waiting to leave or cheering the Andhra chief minister merely to pass the time. “Mujhe Telugu nahi aata (I don’t know Telugu),” said a young man who kept cheering for Naidu as he made jabs at KCR. After Naidu left, groups of women waited for vehicles arranged for them.

An auto driver, working as a TRS activist, asked a few women why they were attending the alliance’s rally. “The earnings of a husband and wife are different,” a woman replied, “but I will obviously vote for the car (TRS).”

While the TDP, BJP and Congress are seen as outsiders in Telangana, KCR is seen as one of them. TRS has even successfully appropriated various Andhra songs to his party’s advantage. At the rally, the audience danced to an altered version of a popular Telugu song from the movie Rangasthalam, which unfolds in the context of coastal Andhra of the 1980s. The lyrics of the TRS version of “Aa Gattu Kosthava Ranganna Eegattu Kostava” (will you stay on that side of the bank, oh Ranganna, will you come to this side) asks the electorate for whom they will vote — the good represented by KCR and his policies and the evil represented by the Prajakutami and BJP.

Furthermore, the Congress is likely to have an advantage in districts such as Nalgonda, where it had traditionally held power. The votes of landless labourers and tenant farmers could add to the Prajakutami vote share in many areas since these sections have not been able to avail any benefits of KCR’s “Rythu Bandhu” farmers’ investment support scheme.

“I have only half an acre,” said Ramulamma, a street vendor at Choutuppal in Nalgonda district. “Only the haves are getting fatter.”

A flower seller at the same junction in Choutuppal can’t decide for whom to vote. “They haven’t done much work in our area. But my mother gets pension regularly.”

In areas where the contest is close between the TRS and Prajakutami, the pink party might get an upper hand because of the welfare schemes it has implemented. In constituencies where BJP candidates are contesting, the goodwill the TRS has harvested through welfare schemes might help them win. Also, the BJP seems to have an unspoken arrangement with the TRS in many places.

“Take this,” a woman said, handing me a BJP pamphlet. “But vote for car (TRS).” She lives in Nalgonda town and gets paid around Rs 200 to distribute pamphlets.

S Latha, another women employed by the BJP to distribute pamphlets said, “We can run our lives only by doing labour work. How can we not go?”

For these women, election campaigns are just another opportunity for employment.

Although the unemployed help political campaigns, or attend rallies for money, they see a deeper meaning in the election process. They hold trust in the democratic process and will most likely leave for their respective constituencies on the day of the election or the day before.

However, not everyone attending these rallies necessarily see the elections as a meaningful process. The teenagers who attended the TRS rally were, perhaps, the most disinterested. One of them even had his headphones on. Many of them recently graduated from school. The two I spoke to weren’t interested to vote for any party even if they were given a chance.

“They are all the same,” said a teenager who would be eligible to vote in four years. He said he and his friends were attending the rally because it was a Sunday and there was no college to attend. “We are 20 of us. And your leader brought us here. We will get money after the meeting. ”

How many shades of pink are there? You could do a Google image search and marvel at the little panels that pop up.

Or, you could simply head to the Telangana Rashtra Samithi’s (TRS) Twitter page.

Scarves, caps, vehicles and even a mic resembling a cone of strawberry ice cream — it’s all a little overwhelming. But why is the party of K Chandrashekhar Rao, the caretaker chief minister, smitten with the colour of flamingoes and romance?

It represents peace and love. That’s what Vinod Kumar, a TRS MP, has been quoted as saying by the Press Trust of India.

And this, he added, is why the TRS chose it in 2001, when Chandrashkhar Rao began the movement for a separate state (separate from Andhra Pradesh, that is).

Chandrashekhar Rao, 64, often simply known as “KCR”, faces an assembly on Friday, December 5. The results of an India Today survey contain good news for the TRS: 48 per cent of respondents backed the current government, up from 44 per cent last month.

Standing in Rao’s way is an alliance between the Congress and three other parties: The Telugu Desam Party, the Communist Party of India and the Telangana Jana Samithi. The BJP is also contesting the election, in all 119 seats.

Will Hyderabad’s streets be awash in pink on counting day? Well, we’ll have to wait and see. (December 11: Mark your calendars.)

But one thing’s for sure: India’s political parties are quickly running out of colours. Think about it: Saffron? BJP. Red? CPI-M. Green? JD-S and AIMIM. Blue? BSP. Yellow? TDP.

At this rate, we may soon have to look beyond the visible spectrum of light!

Telangana health profile soon after TRS comes to power: KCR

The Chief Minister wanted people to question TDP President N Chandrababu Naidu and Congress leaders over their failure to complete pending projects in erstwhile Mahabubnagar district during their previous regimes.

In its next term, the TRS government will be implementing the health profile scheme of all citizens of Telangana State. The government which had successfully implementing the Kanti Velugu scheme, also plans to conduct eye surgeries in January after returning to power as well as deploy medical teams for conducting dental as well as ENT screening for all the citizens shortly.

Making the announcement during the Praja Ashirwada Sabha held at Jedcherla in Mahabubnagar district on Wednesday, Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao stated that soon after the elections, the government will constitute ENT and dental teams who will conduct the screenings for problems related to ear, nose, tongue and dental on the lines of Kanti Velugu eye screening camps. “Both the schemes will be implemented one after the other soon. We will prepare health profile of every citizens of the State including his/her blood group,” he urged.

He questioned why either Congress or TDP failed to implement schemes like Kanti velugu, KCR kits and other such scheme to provide better medical services to the poor and the needy. “It must be because they lack humanity,” he declared. He said unlike Congress and TDP, TRS does not divide people on the basis of caste, religion or region, and the government schemes are an indication in this direction.

The Chief Minister wanted people to question TDP President N Chandrababu Naidu and Congress leaders over their failure to complete pending projects in erstwhile Mahabubnagar district during their previous regimes. He pointed out that Chandrababu Naidu and the subsequent Congress governments have turned erstwhile Mahabubnagar district into a district of migrants.

“Chandrababu Naidu adopted the district but failed to take up any development programmes during his tenure as the Chief Minister of undivided Andhra Pradesh. Since the separate State formation, he has been attempted to obstruct the Palamuru Lift Irrigation Scheme and seeking votes from the same citizens of Palamuru region without any shame or guilt for the injustice meted out to them by him,” he said.

Telangana Elections: TRS banks on development in Gajwel

Gajwel, situated at about 60 kms from Hyderabad, has a total of 2,27,934 voters, including 1,14,362 male electors, 1,13,554 female voters and 18 others. Rao’s main rival in the contest is Vanteru Pratap Reddy (Congress), the nominee fielded by the “grand alliance” (Congress, TDP, CPI and Telangana Jana Samiti).

In the December seven Legislative Assembly polls in Telangana, Gajwel in Siddipet district is a key constituency as TRS Chief and Caretaker Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao is seeking re-election from the seat.

Gajwel, situated at about 60 kms from Hyderabad, has a total of 2,27,934 voters, including 1,14,362 male electors, 1,13,554 female voters and 18 others. Rao’s main rival in the contest is Vanteru Pratap Reddy (Congress), the nominee fielded by the “grand alliance” (Congress, TDP, CPI and Telangana Jana Samiti).

On behalf of other major parties, Akkula Vijaya of BJP is in the fray. Pratap Reddy took on Rao in the 2014 Assembly elections as well (in undivided Andhra Pradesh) as a TDP nominee and he managed to get 67,303 votes against 86,694 votes secured by the TRS Chief.

Narsa Reddy of Congress had obtained 34,085 votes then. Pratap Reddy has since joined Congress and is banking on the combined strength of TDP and Congress.

However, the TRS is relying on the massive development works and welfare schemes undertaken during the last over four years of its government to ensure an emphatic win for Rao. The major development works include improved roads, power and water supply, an education hub (of academic institutions), market godowns and hospitals and other infrastructure facilities.

“Eighty per cent of the polled votes would be in favour of us. It would be outright (win),” Rao’s political secretary S Subhash Reddy told PTI. He cited 24-hour power supply to farm sector, copious supply of fertilisers, ‘Rythu Bandhu’ investment support scheme and farmers’ insurance scheme as examples for some of the welfare measures undertaken by the TRS government.

Rao’s nephew and irrigation minister in the Caretaker government T Harish Rao, who is the TRS candidate from neighbouring Siddipet segment, has been leading the TRS campaign in the constituency.

Pratap Reddy, however, alleged that the TRS government has failed to implement its promises, including three acres of land for Dalits, students tuition fees reimbursement, employment generation and drought relief for farmers.

TRS will strive for ‘federal front’ after polls: KCR

The TRS would play a role in national politics after the December seven state Assembly elections towards the formation of a “federal front” that enhances the powers of states, party president and caretaker chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao said Monday.

Both the Congress and the BJP have miserably failed to rise to the expectations of people, he alleged, addressing an election campaign meeting at Khammam.

“…Narendra Modi was given power with lot of hopes, there is nothing great he has done. (He) has not done anything for people,” he said.

The two parties, while in power at the Centre, had centralised powers, encroaching on powers of states, he alleged.

“A definite ‘federal front’ that resists and stops them and enhances powers of states needs to come..I have made some effort for it… But, TRS will do politics, after these polls, that keeps Delhi under check,” he said.

Rao, who resumed his election campaign after a gap, said the state government was implementing as many as 411 welfare schemes.

He highlighted the schemes and promises of the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS), including ‘Rythu Bandhu’ investment support scheme for farmers, hike in social security pension for poor, ‘Kanti Velugu’ eye screening for all, high salaries paid to Anganwadi personnel and others.

Referring to the criticism against the TRS government on the double bedroom houses for poor, he said it would be useful for two generations.

The Congress and the TDP are part of the “grand alliance” of opposition parties for the assembly elections.

He criticised the Congress and TDP for failing to ensure adequate power when they were in power.

Attacking Telugu Desam party (TDP) chief N Chandrababu Naidu, he alleged that the Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister has written to the Centre opposing certain irrigation projects in Telangana.

Telangana Polls : KCR files nomination for Gajwel

Telangana Rashtra Samithi president and caretaker chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao on Wednesday filed his nomination papers for contesting the assembly elections from Gajwel assembly constituency in Siddipet district.

KCR submitted the papers at the Revenue Divisional Office at Gajwel town exactly at 2.34 pm, which is believed to be an auspicious time fixed by his family priests.

He was accompanied by his nephew and state irrigation minister T Harish Rao and a host of party leaders.

Before filing the nomination papers, the TRS chief conducted special prayers at Lord Venkateshawra Swamy temple at Konaipalli village of Nagunuru block, about 30 km from Gajwel.

The temple was decorated with flowers on the occasion of KCR’s special prayers. Temple priest Brahmadev Tripathi and several other senior priests blessed the chief minister.

He placed the nomination appears at the feet of the god, before putting his signature on them.

Later, he addressed the villagers briefly saying that the village and the temple had been sentimental for him since he entered politics in 1983. He vowed to develop the village on all fronts and bring waters of Kaleshwaram lift irrigation project to the village by next year.

“I will come to this temple with Kaleswaram water to perform pooja to the Lord”, he promised.

Interestingly, Gajwel assembly constituency has also a strong sentiment attached to it. Ever since it was formed in 1978, no MLA has been elected for two consecutive terms from this constituency, which was once part of Medak district.

Though two former MLAs — B Sanjeeva Rao and J Geetha Reddy represented this constituency for twice in the past, they got elected in different years, but not consecutively.

In 2014, KCR won the election for the first time on TRS ticket over TDP candidate Vanteru Pratap Redddy with a margin of over 19,000 votes, while then sitting Congress MLA T Narsa Reddy came third. Pratap Reddy is now contesting on the Congress ticket, while Narsa Reddy is supporting him.

If the Gajwel jinx for the elected candidates works out this year, too, KCR won’t be able to win the elections again from this constituency. But the chief minister appeared confident of breaking this jinx.

“With the blessings of Lord Venkateshwara and the people of Konaipalli, I am confident of winning the elections again. And the TRS is going to return to power by winning more than 100 out of 119 assembly seats,” he said.

Meanwhile, Harish Rao also filed his nomination papers for contesting the elections from Siddipet constituency. Before praying to the Lord Venkateshwara of Konaipalli, Harish also prayed at a dargah and a church before proceeding to the returning officer’s office to submit his nominations.

M Madhusudhanachary, the speaker of the recently dissolved Telangana Assembly, also filed his nomination from Bhupalpally constituency.

We Will Never Tie-up With BJP, Our Views are Very Different, Says TRS’ KTR

KCR’s son and IT minister KT Rama Rao talks to CNN-News18’s Marya Shakil about the grand alliance of opposition parties in Telangana, a tie-up with BJP and a larger role at the Centre.

The state of Telangana will go to polls in Decemeber this year, for the first time since its formation. The ruling TRS is the party in focus and its charismatic chief K Chandrashekar Rao is leaving no stone unturned to win this time. KCR’s son and IT minister KT Rama Rao talks to CNN-News18’s Marya Shakil about the grand alliance of opposition parties in Telangana, a tie-up with BJP and a larger role at the Centre

Interviwer : Joining me right now is TRS leader and IT minister KT Rama Rao. Thank you so much for your time here. So, this is the first Assembly election in Telangana ever since the state was carved out. Most of the surveys are showing it is the advantage to your father (KCR). The move of advancing elections has worked or is working on ground.

KTR: Well, if we look at what has happened in Telangana in last four years, every single election that has taken place in the state, the TRS has won extremely convincingly. Starting from the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation polls, which is considered a mini-general elections of sort, we have won that very convincingly and this election in 2018 doesn’t appear different with TRS clearly ahead. Seven surveys have come out in last two months and each and every one has shown that the TRS will win with at least two- thirds majority. We are very confident.

There is grand alliance called ‘Mahakutami’ which is taking you on. It has Congress, TDP, CPI, Telangana Jan Samiti while you are going it alone, are you confident that your strategy of going alone will help you?

KTR: Let me point out that in 2014 we had won the election with majority . This time around it is no different. Even in the last election, the Congress had an alliance with CPI and other parties but this time even the Telugu Desam has joined its alliance. That is why we call it ‘Maha Ghatiya Bandhan’ there is no fundamental basis, no base on which this alliance can base itself. It is only power mongering and opportunistic alliance. I or people of Telangana don’t see any logic any convincing rationale for this alliance. We are very confident by (going for) this alliance, the Congress has shot itself in the foot and in fact this alliance bundled with contradictions will cost them dear.

We are also seeing that the alliance in Telangana is playing out at the national level. In fact, Chandrababu Naidu is today meeting MK Stalin. When we look at opposition unity and anti-Modi front, let’s not forget that in March your father had made that call for all non-Congress, non-BJP parties to come together. At that time, Naidu had shown inclination towards that, Mamata Banerjee had also approved , what exactly is the status of that third front or federal front?

KTR: The stand is very clear, the so called national parties both the BJP and the Congress have failed our nation. Even after 71 years of Independence there are still many issues plaguing this nation, there are many issues that haven’t been resolved by any of these coalitions. What we want is more powers to the state, more federal approach not just lip sympathy just calling it cooperative federalism or competitive federalism. If really India has to progress and grow and emerge as a very strong nation, the state has to be empowered and that is exactly why the idea of federal front was rooted by our leader KCR. Now what Chandrababu Naidu and other parties are up to is none of our concern. We hope to win this election in December convincingly and then we will start focusing on national politics and we will start making our moves after December 11.

So are saying there will be another attempt at federal front post December?

KTR: Absolutely. In fact, our CM and our leader is extremely clear that both the national parties have failed this nation and this country needs more stronger regional forces which can come together and can assure the true federal spirit which will lead to a strong nation from such combination

Who will stand with you as far as an anti-Modi bloc is concerned that is formalising and taking shape. We are seeing Sharad Pawar, Chandrababu Naidu, Mamata Banerjee, Akhilesh Yadav, who really would be a part of the federal front?

KTR: Trust me, the world is not as simple as it seems and there isn’t only a bipolar kind of situation that it is only UPA or NDA. There will be a third front, there will be a coalition of likeminded parties which will emerge because we still have a long way to go for national elections. We are right now focusing on just state elections but after this you will see a lot of things happening in January and February

But it doesn’t look like that Chandrababu Naidu is concentrating on state elections that is due in a month’s time , why do you think he has gone in for such coalition in state and taking you on with help of the Congress.

KTR: Desperate times call for desperate measures and Chandrababu Naidu ‘s party faces extinction threat in Telangana so therefore he is merely trying to assert himself and retain a seat or two in Telangana by way of this alliance. His party will be decimated in Telangana. His party is set for an extinction so it’s a desperate time for Mr Naidu. It’s a desperate gamble to try and cook up a coalition which has no fundamental basis whatsoever.

There is speculation that your father had kept the central leadership of the BJP in the loop when he went for dissolution of the Assembly. So, is Mr KCR going to be part of the NDA before or after 2019?

KTR: Let me put it this way, speculate as you may, speculate as anybody wants to, the fact is clear that we are an independent party we are not part of the UPA or the NDA. We have no friendship or liking for any of the national parties which we have consistently maintained. So to accuse us or speculate that we are going to sail with the BJP is nothing but humbug and you will see our efforts. You will see our efforts to actually bring viable alternative to the NDA and the UPA after December11, and you will see it yourself.

Last question, can you assure the people of Telangana that you are not going to support the BJP before 2019 and these are only rumours and speculations?

KTR: Like I said, absolutely without a question because there is no way our ideology can compel us to come together. We have a very different view from the BJP on this country, on our state. So there is no way we can work together and I can tell you for sure that Telangana Rashtra Samiti which is going to sweep the upcoming Assembly elections, we will also win at least 15 parliamentary seats in Telangana in 2019. We will have a very important role to play in Delhi. Any political party in India which thinks like us and agree with us and have a common fundamental basis in the core belief that the true federalism means empowering states. So we believe very strongly that a few regional parties coming together can certainly dictate who will be in driver’s seat in Delhi after April 2019 and you will see TRS playing a very important role there but i can assure you that it is neither going to be the BJP nor the Congress which will be in driver’s seat in Delhi.

Telangana Polls : Only TRS can ensure Muslim welfare: Mahipal Reddy

TRS candidate from Patancheru Assembly constituency Gudem Mahipal Reddy has said that only the Telangana Rashtra Samithi government can ensure overall development of the Muslim community in the State.

Mahipal Reddy, who had an exclusive meeting with minorities in the course of his electioneering in the constituency, said Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao had initiated several welfare schemes and development programmes for the benefit of the Muslim community within a short span of four years. The former TRS MLA from Patancheru said the government initiatives had already brought about a perceptible change in the community’s life. The constituency has sizeable minority votes, accounting for 40,000 of the total electorate of 2.8 lakh.

Accusing the Congress of creating communal tensions in old Hyderabad to suit their needs of power politics in the past, Reddy said Chandrashekhar Rao had ensured peace and harmony between communities.

Prior to the meeting with Muslim voters, Reddy visited each and every colony and village in the constituency to mobilise the cadres for the meeting. Stating that construction of a ‘shadikhana’ (marriage hall) was nearing completion in Patancheru, he assured that each and every mandal under Patancheru Assembly constituency would have a ‘shadikhana’. Pointing out that he had promised to take up construction of a ‘shadikhana’ in a two-acre plot on the premises of Idgah in Ameenpur mandal headquarters at a cost of Rs 1.5 crore, Reddy said that he would fulfil the promise in the next tenure.

He said that he would also ensure construction of boundary walls for all the idgahs, dargas, ashoorkhanas and other Muslim religious places to protect them. Following the request of the party workers, Mahipal Reddy said he would set up an exclusive minority cell at the MLA camp office so that the citizens can visit his office any time to know the existing government schemes. The cell will also assist them on how to avail them.

Earlier, a huge rally was taken out prior to the meeting. A record number of women took part in the meeting as several Muslim leaders from the party and TRS took part.

TRS will play important role at Centre after polls: Rama Rao

Telangana Rashtra Samithi leader and minister in the caretaker government K T Rama Rao Friday expressed confidence that his party would play an important role in government formation after the Lok Sabha elections next year.

“Jayashankar (late ideologue of Telangana) said take not by begging but by dictating. I am confident that, whoever is there at the Centre in 2019, the prime minister would not be there without a role for TRS, your blessings, the support of Telangana people,” he said, addressing a meeting at Sircilla near Karimnagar.

Rama Rao, son of TRS president and caretaker chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao, said a person supported by TRS would become the prime minister. He also said the TRS would take measures for the welfare of weavers in the state.

KTR elated as traders extend support to TRS

Caretaker IT & Municipal Administration Minister KT Rama Rao on Sunday welcomed Hyderabad-based businessmen, including Marwadi Samaj, Agarwal Samaj and Jain Samaj, into the TRS fold at a programme held at Telangana Bhavan here on Sunday. He offered traditional pink shawls to the businessmen, who extended full support to the ruling party in the upcoming elections.

KTR also stated that the TRS government dispelled fears and apprehensions of multiple businessmen by providing them with total security and a free hand for business and trade activity in the new State. However, the KCR dispensation disproved the critics by tiding power crisis in just six months and 90 per cent of problem had been addressed. Referring to facilities in the city, KTR said the State government focused on providing better roads, 24-hour power supply to farm sector, industry and domestic needs.

The new State was making rapid strides on growth trajectory with a focus on law and order and protection to the business and traders. He also said the infant State has achieved better economic development at national level with active participation by all sorts of businessmen flourishing in the State, he said.

KTR appealed to the businessmen to vote for the ruling party for completing the projects and developing the State further. Otherwise, the people would face the problems of power, law and order and corruption if Mahakutami was voted to power as their commandants are in Delhi and Amaravathi, he cautioned. The people should choose whether they need a local Chief Minister, who cares for all or a sealed cover CM imposed from Delhi, he suggested.
